A 24-metre timeline of five centuries of technology and power now stands in the water basin around Socle C, right beside the concrete remains of the old steelworks. Calculating Empires is the work of artists and researchers Kate Crawford and Vladan Joler, presented by Elektron, and it is open day and night, free, until 10 January 2027.
Elektron says the piece won the Silver Lion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale and has joined the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Up close it is dense, so take your time with it. It also features in the weekly guided tours of the Cité des sciences run by Fonds Belval, and Vladan Joler will give a public talk with the University of Luxembourg’s Espace Cultures, date still to be announced.
