Esch Beeval is a planted square between the blast furnaces and the Möllerei, run by CIGL Esch. Hexagonal beds of herbs, perennials and shrubs sit among picnic tables, benches and bright loungers, with a sand playground in the middle and the old conveyor bridge running overhead.
The planting is chosen for pollinators. The boards along the beds list sage, rosemary, thyme, chives, mint, basil and oregano among the herbs; lavender, mullein, fennel, teasel and comfrey among the perennials; old roses, elder, twisted hazel, spindle and hawthorn among the shrubs; and roses, ivy, clematis and honeysuckle climbing the frames.
The project is social employment as much as biodiversity: CIGL Esch runs it for work placements and local services, and most of the plants are grown from seed at the Escher Geméisguart, which sells direct at 46 rue Dieswee and at the Esch market on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
