I love Belval

Your first week in Belval

Six places, in the order you will actually need them.

Everything here was checked on 4 September, 2026.

  1. Belval's blast furnaces seen from the terrace, with a clear sky behind them

    New here

    Your first week in Belval

Six places, in the order you will actually need them. A shop before a nice dinner.

  2. The Delhaize entrance inside Belval Plaza on its reopening day

    1 · The everyday shop

    Start with the boring one

You will want bread before you want a view. Delhaize sits inside Belval Plaza, so the weekly shop can share a trip with the post office and the chemist.

It reopened on 27 August after a three week refit, which is why it looks newer than everything around it.

    Sunday
    7:30–19:00, which is unusual here
    Weekdays
    7:30–20:00, and 7:00–21:00 on Friday
    Where
14 Avenue du Rock'n'Roll, inside the Plaza
    Card 2
  3. Grass, paths and trees in Parc um Belval

    2 · Somewhere to sit

    Parc um Belval

The answer to “is there anywhere to just be outside”. A playground, a Teqball table, and nine holes of disc golf that are free to play if you bring your own discs.

Under the grass is the old Source Bel-Val, whose mineral water was bottled and sent abroad long before the steelworks took the name.

    Open
24 hours, every day, holidays included
    Where
    2 passage Pablo Picasso, Belvaux

  4. The Moellerei, the old ore and coke store where the blast furnace visit begins

3 · The one you will photograph

Climb the thing that built the place

The university was built around the furnaces rather than beside them, and the way to understand that is to go up one. The route starts in the Möllerei and follows the path the ore once took.

There is a lift for part of the climb. Check before you set out on a windy day.

    Closed
    Tuesdays. 10:00–19:00 every other day

    Coming up
Guided tour, Sunday 20 September, 14:30

  5. The interior of Café Saga, with the industrial roof structure above

    4 · Coffee off campus

    Café Saga

Every campus needs somewhere that is not the campus. Saga is in the old steelworks fabric between the Rockhal and the Maison du Savoir, with a terrace, a short lunch menu and quiz nights.

Learn its weekend before you walk over. It is the one that catches people out.

    Closed
    Saturday and Sunday
    Monday
    12:00–14:00 only
    This Tuesday
    Quiz night, 8 September, 18:30

  6. The Haus vum Vëlo community bicycle workshop beside Belval-Université station

    5 · Getting about

You do not need a car

Second class public transport is free for journeys inside Luxembourg, including the train that brought you here. That covers most of what a first week asks of you.

For the rest there is the Haus vum Vëlo beside the station: a community workshop with the tools out, second-hand bikes, cargo bikes to try, and volunteers who will teach you to fix your own.

    Open
16:00–20:00 Mon, Tue, Wed and Fri
    Saturday
    14:00–18:00. Closed Thursday and Sunday
    Students

  7. The glass front of Belval Plaza, patterned with coloured triangles

    6 · Everything else

    Belval Plaza

Chemist, optician, post office, phone shop, cinema. The place you end up when something has gone wrong and you need it fixed today.

It shuts on Sundays like almost everything else, with one exception this weekend.

    This Sunday
6 September, 10:00–18:00, for the braderie
    Normally
    Mon–Fri 10:00–20:00, Sat 9:00–19:00, Sun closed
    Parking
One hour free, two once you have bought something
    Card 7
  8. Before you are caught out

Three things nobody warns you about

The rest of your first week, in the order it usually goes wrong.

    Sunday
Luxembourg closes properly. Check which places do not before you set off.
    Transport
Free in second class anywhere in the country. First class and the far side of a border crossing still need a ticket.
    August
Half of Belval shuts for two or three weeks and rarely announces it far in advance.
