For the European Heritage Days, Alzette Belval is sending families out on a treasure hunt across the border. The trail starts and finishes at Belval-Université station, runs for 5.7 km through the landscapes between France and Luxembourg, and stops for refreshments at Matgesfeld in Sanem. Answer the questionnaire along the way and you win a prize. Alzette Belval is the European grouping of territorial cooperation that links the communes on both sides of the border.
It is free, but you need to register: online until Wednesday 30 September, or on the day if places are left. The organisers are planning for about a hundred people. Departures are staggered between 09:30 and 11:00, everyone should be back by 14:00, and they reckon on about two and a half hours. The route mixes town pavements and country paths, so wear walking shoes. The organisers say it works on foot, by bike or with a pushchair, as long as the pushchair can handle stony tracks, and dogs are welcome on a lead. Children must be with an adult, and because the trail crosses into France, the rules ask that children walking without their own parents carry an identity card and a parental authorisation. You can follow the route in the OpenRunner app.
Getting there needs a moment’s thought: 3 and 4 October is one of the railway works weekends, so no trains call at Belval. Bus L60 replaces them from early morning, at least every half hour. Our railway works guide has the details.
