Lunch in Belval, ordered off the website

Their menu was on the table and neither of us touched it.

Two of us got to Nonna Nenetta 2.0 just before one on Monday, a catch-up and a meeting at the same time, and there was a table, which at that hour is luck. Then one of us picked up a phone, opened ilovebelval.com, and there was the week at Nonna Nenetta with the dishes and the prices on it. So we ordered off that.

I put those menus up in August. Monday was the first time one of them decided what I ate, and I did not notice it happening until afterwards.

I had the spaghetti aux moules à la tarentine, 18 €. Cherry tomatoes, oregano, basil and fresh mussels. I ate the first minute of it far too quickly and then made myself slow down. Across the table, the penne à la Monte-Carlo off the pasta of the day, 15 €, a ragù of beef and pork with basil pesto stirred through it. We had a proper list of things to get through and neither of us said a word for the first few minutes. That is the review.

So, the menus. Every week I go round and collect them from the Belval places that publish one and they go up on the front page, a card each with a few of the week’s dishes showing and the full thing behind it, prices and all, exactly as the restaurant sent it and in whatever language they sent it in. Nonna Nenetta 2.0 is on there. So are Café Coyote Belval, MyCaffé, Nyx, Schmelz, Terra Steakhouse and Bistrot V’diterraneo whenever their week is in, and a few more besides.

Café Saga has no card at all this week, because they are shut until the 31st. Good for them. That is the page doing its job. If a place has not sent me their week it is not there, and better nothing than a menu from a fortnight ago.

What I really want is for it to end up in a group chat, which is where lunch in Belval usually goes to die. It settles the “I don’t mind” thing faster than any of us ever have.
