Forty-odd years ago in Venice, California, Suicidal Tendencies made the noise that helped invent crossover thrash. On Tuesday 23 March 2027, three men who played in that band bring it to MK Bar, as Luicidal.
The band’s 1983 debut was, in the critic Steve Huey’s words, “fast, furious and funny”, and its single, Institutionalized, became one of the first hardcore punk videos to get real airplay on MTV. Louiche Mayorga played bass on that record and on Join the Army in 1987. Rocky George had joined on lead guitar in 1984, and his metal leanings pulled the band from punk towards thrash, a turn Mike Clark pushed further when he arrived at the end of the decade.
That turn cost Mayorga his place. He wanted the band to stay punk, and was out by 1988. In 2012, missing “being on the stage as an artist”, he started Luicidal back in Venice to play the songs from those first three albums. George and Clark have since joined him, and the band calls itself the OGs of Suicidal Tendencies.
Their Rage Tour stops at MK Bar with a special guest still to be named. Doors at 19:00, show at 20:00. Presale is €18 on Weezevent, and €20 at the door.
MK Bar is at 1 Avenue du Swing, the same address as Coppers. Ice Nine Kills play Rockhal the same night. Who still knows every word of Institutionalized?
