Maison du Savoir

Belval’s 83-metre university landmark, balancing a long teaching block against a tower that answers the furnaces across the square.

Maison du Savoir is the building that tells you the university has arrived. Its long horizontal form appears to balance above the ground while an 83-metre tower rises beside it, creating a new vertical marker in conversation with the blast furnaces. The symbolism is hard to miss, but the building is more than a skyline gesture.

It is a main centre for teaching and university administration, with auditoriums and spaces that also host conferences and public events. Cross Place de l’Université and the angles keep changing, sometimes weighty, sometimes almost improbable. Belval’s older structures were built to produce steel. This one was built to gather knowledge, and it refuses to do so quietly.
