What is Ebenezer?
A new film of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, the 1843 story of the miser Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts who visit him. Set in early Victorian London, it follows Scrooge through visions of his past, his present and his future, towards a last chance to change. Johnny Depp plays Scrooge.
It is directed by Ti West, from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, and produced by Emma Watts for Paramount Pictures. West made his name in horror with X, Pearl and MaXXXine, and Paramount presents this one as “a thrilling ghost story set in Dickens’ London”. The tagline sets the mood: “The name you know. The story you don’t.”
Who is in it?
- Johnny Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge, with Arthur Conti as the young Ebenezer
- Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, Scrooge’s late business partner
- Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past
- Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present
- Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit, Scrooge’s clerk
- Sam Claflin as Fred, Scrooge’s nephew
Daisy Ridley, Ellie Bamber and Charlie Murphy complete the cast.
Behind the scenes
- Paramount announced the film in October 2025, and filming began in January 2026, with London and Dublin as locations.
- Ian McKellen’s part as Marley took six days. “It was only six days, but it was well worth it,” he told Variety, adding that he “fell in love with” Depp on set.
- Depp showed the first footage himself at CinemaCon on 16 April 2026.
- On 23 July 2026 he surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con in full Scrooge costume. He stepped out of a snowy “Scrooge and Marley” counting house set up in the Gaslamp Quarter, scolded the crowd, finished with “Humbug!”, then walked into Hall H to introduce the trailer.
