The engineering test hall on the university campus, at 30 Avenue des Sidérurgistes.
Not every kind of science fits on a laboratory bench. Structures have to be loaded until they deform, materials pushed until they fail, and equipment used that is closer in scale to a workshop than to a lab. That is what a test hall is for: a large clear-span space with the height and the lifting capacity to work at something like real size.
It was built as part of the Fonds Belval programme that produced the campus, alongside the workshops and the north test hall.
The address is the thing. A hundred years ago the people on this ground were finding out what steel could take by making it. Now the building where that question is asked stands on the avenue named after them.
