Before they were Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen’s band was called Mammoth. His son Wolfgang grew up hearing the name, gave it to his own band, and played every instrument himself on its first album.
Mammoth play the Rockhal Club on Tuesday 1 December. Doors at 19:30.
Wolfgang Van Halen played every instrument on the first record himself, which tells you most of what you need to know about how he approaches the job. Live he fronts a full band, and the songs sit in straightforward hard rock.
Standing, in the Club, part of Rockhal’s Temple of Metal strand. A small room for a name this loaded.
Who are Mammoth?
Mammoth is the hard rock band of Wolfgang Van Halen, a Los Angeles singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born in 1991. He played bass in Van Halen from 2007 to 2020 and toured with Mark Tremonti’s band, and began Mammoth as a solo project in 2015, recording at 5150 Studios. It became his full-time band in 2020.
The name is a nod to family history: before they were Van Halen, his father Eddie’s band was called Mammoth, and Wolfgang grew up hearing the name. On the debut album he played everything himself, from vocals and guitars to bass, keyboards and drums. On stage he is joined by Frank Sidoris, Jonathan Jourdan, Ronnie Ficarro and Garrett Whitlock. The band went by Mammoth WVH until 2025.
Their records
- Mammoth WVH (2021): entered the Billboard 200 at number 12 and topped the US hard rock albums chart.
- Mammoth II (2023): another number 1 on the US hard rock albums chart.

Songs to know before the night: “Distance”, “Don’t Back Down”, “Epiphany”, “Another Celebration at the End of the World”, “I’m Alright”, “The End” and “The Spell”.
Milestones
- “Distance”, a tribute to his father, reached number 1 on the US mainstream rock and hard rock charts and was nominated for Best Rock Song at the 2022 Grammy Awards.
- More than 100 million streams, according to the venue.
- Tours alongside Metallica and Pantera, and North American dates opening for Foo Fighters.
- A performance at the 2024 MusiCares gala honouring Jon Bon Jovi.
The Rockhal date is part of the venue’s Temple of Metal series and comes on the band’s late-2026 run, a year after The End.
