Back2Back: Dune at Kinepolis Belval

Some films ask for a big screen. Dune asks for a big screen and an evening with nothing else in it. On Friday 13 November Kinepolis Belval gives it both: Denis Villeneuve’s two Dune films back to back in Screen 2, its Laser Ultra room, from 18:45 until about a quarter to one.

Five weeks later the same screen shows Dune: Part Three in avant-première. If you have only seen one of the first two, or saw them on a laptop, this is the night to put that right.

What are the two films?

Dune (2021, 2 hours 35 minutes) follows Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as his family takes charge of Arrakis, a desert planet and the only source of the spice the universe runs on. It is a trap, and the film leaves Paul in the open desert with the Fremen. It won six Oscars at the 94th Academy Awards.

Dune: Part Two (2024, 2 hours 45 minutes) starts where the first one stops. Paul lives among the Fremen with Chani (Zendaya) and turns towards revenge on the house that destroyed his family. It was nominated for five Oscars, Best Picture among them, and won two.

Together they adapt Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel in two halves, with the same director, the same cinematographer in Greig Fraser and the same Hans Zimmer score running under both. Seen in one sitting, they play as the one long story they were written as.

How much does it cost, and how do I book?

The Kinepolis booking page shows €21.50 for a standard seat and €25.50 for a Cosy seat, for the whole evening. Book on kinepolis.lu and choose Kinepolis Belval. Kinepolis promises snacks, drinks and goodies on the night.

Is five hours of Dune too much for one evening?

Kinepolis counts 5 hours 21 minutes of film. It sounds a lot until you look at the timings: the first film ends at about 21:35 and the second starts at 22:00, which leaves 25 minutes to stand up, refill and argue about the ending before going back to Arrakis.

Good to know

• Come a little before 18:45 if you want the snacks before the lights go down.
